Dropping my kids off to school and I pass a 7 year old saying to another kid, “you said you liked me, but you haven’t apologised for hurting me, that means you like yourself more than you like me” .
Even kids know..
“It occurs to me: The weight of the heartbreaks we carry is the only aging force there really is. It’s why we meet some people in their nineties whose spirits are lighter than eiderdown and some twenty-somethings who already seem old, like they’re carrying inhabited dungeons of banished travelers on the inside.”

Today I sat with a sister that is 8 years younger than me. After a few hours of being together she looks at her phone and quickly gets up and says she has to hurry home. I asked her if everything was ok and she replied: ‘No! I have to memorise a page from the Qur’an for tomorrow’. I was amazed and said, Allahumma barik I didn’t know you did hifdh, how much hifdh (memorisation) have you made? And she replied: ‘If I finish this page for tomorrow, This will be my fifth Juzz’ ..
I was speechless and so ashamed, and all I could think about was all the anasheed that I’ve memorised ..
And then, someone close to me sends me this message without knowing about this episode with the sister, saying:
‘The Qur’an is a light. Not alone is it recited daily, but it is practised in every aspect of life first and foremost. The consequence of abandoning it, is to live in darkness and doing the shaytan favors, because whoever lives in the darkness can fall and hurt themselves, but also fall and hurt others in their way. And it’s abandonment will also darken the inner peace of the believer, and Sakinah can only find it’s way home through the light’
